Disc Golf Baskets for Kids in São Luís, Portugal
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Dave Robinson. My family and I have moved to the village of São Luís in Portugal. We're buying 19 disc golf baskets to install on the edge of town, within walking distance for the locals. Please consider supporting this unique activity for the kids of São Luís! Disc golf is a low-impact, inexpensive outdoor activity that fosters community through casual play, teaching clinics, weekly leagues, tournaments, a pro shop, etc. If you donate, you'll be helping to pay for the disc golf baskets and some beginner discs for the kids. Any additional funds would go to materials for the construction of tee pads.
Importantly, disc golf courses do NOT require watering, mowing or continued landscaping of any kind. Our course will thread under, over and around the beautiful trees and terrain on a scenic plot of land—there will be some pruning of branches at most. Additionally, much of the building of the course will rely on volunteer labor.
High-quality, durable, portable baskets from DiscGolfPark in Finland will be delivered by mid-September. This leaves us the fall, winter and spring to install, tweak and perfect the course design and flow—with feedback from the local kids, of course. The estimated cost for the baskets is $6,300 (Euros and U.S. Dollars are of nearly equal value right now).
(Lastly, the 19th basket will be used for lessons and practice for the kids in a safe area on the edge of the course. We will also be able to take this extra basket to schools to introduce even more kids in the region to disc golf.)
Additional Info about the location & aims of the project:
Introducing disc golf to the kids (and anyone else interested) is something my family and I have been talking about since visiting this village in 2016 & '18. We are working with local landowners whom we've known since our first trip to the region and they are excited to host a course on their property.
Our course, the first 18-hole disc golf course in Portugal, will wind through the sun and shade of a tree farm next to an established equestrian training/riding center—hundreds of rolling acres featuring beautiful views, huge cork oaks, pine and eucalyptus trees. The Mediterranean climate here is ideal for disc golf year-round. And São Luís (20-minutes from the coast) already hosts serious hikers, mountain bikers, beach-goers, surfers and a stream of European travelers for much of the year.
While Disc Golf is massive in Scandinavian countries, it is just getting its footing in Spain and Portugal. There's a small, fun nine-hole course in Lisbon, over two hours away and a couple of 18-hole courses about six hours away over the border in southern Spain. We hope to soon connect with these other disc golf clubs in Spain as well as the small but growing community in Lisbon, Portugal.
