Hi, I’m Dave Gebroe, creator & host of what is quickly becoming THE go-to music podcast. It’s called Discograffiti. Discograffiti’s the music podcast that delivers the objective truth about the entire discography of every single artist and band that ever existed. Each episode features a different guest, they choose the band, and then we rate every single release from zero to five stars--which allows us all to come face to face with the true shape of their overall arc. It's a music lover's dream come true.
The first episode of the show premiered on November 1, 2021. Pink Floyd. 100 people or so listened, and co-host, engineer, & editor Joe Kennedy and I were over the moon. Right from the word go, we posted weekly. We never missed a week, even when Joe's dad passed away. Somewhere around late spring of 2022, we began to see that this was going to be a ridiculous amount of work if we were going to do it right, and if we were going to monetize it. First our on-spec PR guy left, then my co-host left...
...and I never missed a week. Not one. I learned how to record and edit and make shows that were just as professional-sounding, if not more so, than our earlier episodes. I began booking even more prominent guests, with absolutely no help from anyone else…guests like John Landis, Lou Barlow from Dinosaur Jr, Monkees manager Andrew Sandoval, Spiral Stairs & Bob Nastanovich from Pavement, Replacements biographer Bob Mehr, Bob Forrest, Kevin Whelan from The Wrens, Randy Randall from No Age, L’Rain, Jonathan Rado from Foxygen, Comedian Jim Florentine, Sergio Dias from Os Mutantes, and Marvin Gaye biographer David Ritz.
I also began a Patreon subscription service to begin monetizing Discograffiti, which added two more shows per week so as to provide value to my subscribers. I am now publishing three shows a week. Sometimes more than three. This past week it was five.
One of those shows, The Private Press with Paul Major, is currently in development to become a television show. In it, legendary private press record dealer Paul Major and I hunt down and visit would-be recording artists whose careers never quite ignited, to see what types of lives fate dealt them in lieu of their more career-successful major label contemporaries.
Throughout the summer, Discograffiti became more and more successful. It got to the point where I was so busy with work for the show that I regularly started setting my alarm for 2:30am to get all the work done...before going to work just to edit and promote the show for 8 1/2 additional hours. Finally, there was nothing left to do but to leave my job. Keep in mind, I'm married with a 3-year-old...but we're all huddled together--Jen, Mason, and I--gunning for this to happen in a big way.
So the plan is: we're right now in the process of selling our house and moving to New Jersey this fall in order to live as inexpensively as possible, focus on creating three quality shows per week on an ongoing basis, and begin production on Discograffiti's The Private Press. The listenership is approximately 5,000 per week now, and growing.
The funds would be utlilized in the following way:
$100,000 would provide all operational costs for the show for an entire year.
- Studio rental
- Equipment upgrade
- Hired editors
- Graphic Design
- Social media support
- PR Team
$35,000 would allow for the production of five episodes at a budget of $7,000 per episode.
There are three goals for the year: to continue producing the greatest music podcast of all time, to get picked up by a podcast network that could help lighten my load and substantially increase both listenership and ad revenue, and to produce an extremely high-quality television show for peanuts.
Please help me to ensure that Discograffiti is the standard-bearer for all that is awesome about music.
DON’T RISK FEELING BADLY ABOUT YOURSELF BY NOT GIVING.
