Displaced Young Mother and Infant from Atl Fire

Hi everyone,

My name is Kirsten Hoge. I have created this for my 21 year old sister, Kaitlyn, and her family. It breaks my heart to share that my sister, along with her fiance and their five month old daughter, were residents living at Lavista Walk apartments in Atlanta, GA. This is the complex that has been completely destroyed due to a massive fire that began on November 10th and continued to burn the building down for days following. Lavista Walk notified residents today that the entire complex has now been completely condemned due to the massive fire, water and smoke damage. The building completely caved in two days after the fire was finally put out leaving my sister and her family with nowhere to go, no place to live, no food to carry with them, quite literally - nothing. At the moment, the apartment complex has not offered residents any financial or emotional support, nor have they returned rent, deposit money, emails, or helped in any way at all. The worst part is, my sister and her five month old baby barely escaped in time as the apartment complex had chained off and dead-bolted their fire exit that was at the staircase right below her apartment. As you can imagine, Kaitlyn faced a life or death decision, considering every option of evacuation, including jumping over the balcony. Luckily, she acted quickly and was able to run through the entire building, holding her baby and her stroller, to another staircase through the parking garage. This is easily a 10 minute run. Thankfully, her entire family is safe and evacuated in time, but was then forced to sit outside the building for hours into the next morning, watching the life she and her fiance worked so hard to create for their child, disintegrate before their eyes. Since this tragic event, my sister's young family has been completely displaced. She is 21, her fiance is 22, her baby is freshly five months old. On top of everything, this happened right before the holidays. Not only losing their belongings in their three bedroom home, but the nursery they created for their new born baby, presents and preparations as they had began preparing for the holidays, hundreds of dollars of groceries, formula and diapers they had just bought the day of the fire, and not to mention, the safety of their own home they have spent so long creating.

If you don't know much about our family, it has been a year of tragedy overall. My sister and I lost our father late last October and the past year has been full of trials and tribulations that we were forced to face and be strong through over and over again. I mention this purely to emphasize this fact: my sister is extremely strong willed and very hard headed. She will not ask for help, so I am doing it for her.

If you know me, you know my sister is my pride and joy. She has been since she was born. I will do anything I can to help her through this, which is why I'm here asking for your help too. They now face numerous bills to come in attempting to restart and rebuild their life and stability all over again. Anything you donate, even $1, will help support them in doing exactly that.

Since the fire spread so quickly, the city of Atlanta's fire department has launched an investigation on code violations the building may have had, along with why fire exits were padlocked. If you'd like to know more on the story, you can see more at the link here.
