“Nothing is more important than EMPATHY for another human being’s suffering.” Audrey Hepburn
I want to share the story of my friend who needs your help and compassion. I am raising money for Shelley, 71 years of age and her son, Cameron, or just “Cam”, now 31.
My friend and her husband adopted her baby son from Canada. Being diagnosed with cerebral palsy at one and autism at three, Cam was robbed of having a normal life, independence, and the ability to move and think freely. The adoption agency did not prepare the paperwork correctly regarding the legal Immigration process. Little did the family know that it would take them 25 years to correct legal mistakes to make their adopted son an American citizen. They faced unending huge Medical bills. When Cam was 10 and a set of debilitating illnesses transformed his, and his family’s lives, Shelley's husband did not want to deal with a sick son anymore.
Shelley had a successful professional career, but many years ago, she started having her own severe health issues. She had several debilitating back surgeries and later survived breast cancer. Life has been hard, but Shelley never gave up. She has always been positive and compassionate towards others. She is so proud of her severely disabled son.
Cam worked in the payroll department at Sheraton but lost his job in March 2020 when Covid hit. Shelley applied for the Covid Rental Assistance program and received some funds. When the additional government funds became available, she applied again in 2021 and was approved for $12900. She was told that the payment would be made directly to the landlord. To her surprise, she received a letter from a landlord a week ago telling her to pay immediately or she would be evicted. They now owe $12,000 in back rent. She is now facing an eviction notice in just 7 days with no financial resources left.
Cameron now works part-time in Vons at Customer Service, and Shelley is looking for work. Despite her medical problems, Shelley needed to drive Cam to and from work. She has courageously dealt with all the challenges life could throw at her until now. The clock is ticking, and they have nowhere to go. We are seeking to give her the ability to stay in her apartment and time to find work again. We aim to raise $15,000 or more and do it as quickly as possible. If you can imagine a senior citizen kind enough to adopt and love a boy with challenges, now down on their luck, please show some compassion and help us raise funds.
