Djibril and his Family

Donation protected
Last year, when River and myself went on our sabbatical to Africa, the highlight of the trip for the both of us was expanding our community and learning the role of community in non Western society (let me tell you, it’s big). One of our most important introductions was to Djibril. Djibril was 25 years old (same age as River and myself) when he relocated to Senegal from Guinea to find work to support himself, his wife, his mother, brothers, and new born child. Although the same in age, there was almost nothing the same about Djibril’s lived experiences. Like many on the Continent, as Americans River and I could not even fathom how difficult life was for Djibril and his family. Quickly, Djibril became like a brother to us and we learned a little about his story. As a final act before departing Africa, River and I were able to scrape up some funds to send our brother Djibril back home to Guinea to be with his family. Since then, River and I have done what we can to continue to support Djibril as he looked for work opportunities in his home country so he could stay with his family. Unfortunately, like much of Africa, Guineans are suffering sociopolitically, and supporting oneself in their current economy/political situation is tough.
With the recent passing of his mother, Djibril’s family needs him more than ever. He is looking to follow in his brother’s footsteps and relocate to Morocco or Italy to find work.

As my understanding of the word “community” continues to grow and expand, I am learning more about its power, especially in times of difficulty. I am also trying to do a better job acknowledging my community outside of North America, and the responsibility I have to them, as a global citizen. That is why I have decided to ask for some help from my community on the home front in supporting my brother overseas. Please help Djibril and become apart of his now expanding family/network of support. Any amount is appreciated!
