Finding Home

Over the last year and a half, I have been working on a long term project about homelessness in Alaska. I am directing and producing a documentary film, and curating an accompanying photography exhibit, about the life of Felicia Cavanaugh, a homeless woman who lived at the Fairbanks Rescue Mission. Homelessness in the interior of Alaska is an often misunderstood, complex and growing problem that deserves to be explored in depth. Through the power of film and photography, my project aims to discuss common stereotypes about the causes of homelessness by tracing Ms. Cavanaugh’s daily journey. 

Our homeless population is filled with some of our most vulnerable neighbors. This body of work reminds us that we are all share the human experience no matter our circumstance. Through various art exhibitions, public talks and hands-on activities, the project acts as a volunteer initiative for the organizations in the community who work directly with our homeless populations. In addition to serving as a platform for educating our community about homelessness, how to help, and resources for those at risk the art exhibit will serve as a state-wide fundraiser to cultivate funds that will house some of the homeless in Alaska.

An overarching theme that has surfaced in the work, is that we are the building blocks of our community. If we want to end homelessness, then we each must champion the cause with the resources we each have at our disposal and bring those assets to the table.

I need help raising the funds to make this artwork happen. I am already scheduled to exhibit the work at two wonderful galleries in the state of Alaska in December 2019 and February 2020. Great changes start with singular action. I hope you will consider joining me.
