Lucy’s Story

Despite Lucy's usual preference for privacy on social media, we have come together to organize a fundraiser to support Lucy during these challenging times and to uplift her spirits.
Lucy and her partner, Josh, were overjoyed to share the news of their pregnancy. However, during a routine appointment with our community midwife to collect Lucy's medical records and undergo a blood test, complications and concerns arose from the results. This led to a week-long stay at Northampton hospital, where Lucy underwent daily blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy. Eventually, on June 1st, Lucy was transferred to Leicester Royal Infirmary. Before her transfer, she managed to attend her 12-week scan and catch a glimpse of her baby. Despite feeling fine and healthy, Lucy was confused and in disbelief, constantly thinking that the doctors must have made a mistake, as she did not feel unwell.
Unfortunately, June 1st was meant to be the day when Lucy and Josh announced their pregnancy. Instead, it was the day Lucy learned that she has Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML). After numerous discussions with consultants and obstetricians, concerns and risks arose regarding continuing the pregnancy while undergoing chemotherapy. Within a few days, Lucy and Josh were faced with an impossible decision: "Do we take the risk and continue with the pregnancy, or do we terminate to improve my chances of survival?" On June 11th, 2023, Lucy gave birth to a beautiful baby boy at 13 weeks and 1 day through a medical induction.
We aim to support Lucy during this challenging journey and show her our love and care.
Lucy Richmond - “ My dear boy, you were supposed to be the gift of life, instead you gifted me my life. I simply have no logical understanding to how or why this happened. The only answer I have is that you are a little miracle. if I wasn’t pregnant I would not have gone to the doctors and had a blood test, even with symptoms. I truly believe that you were sent here on earth with a job and purpose, to save me and make me aware of my health. My darling boy, you’ve done your job so successfully and you can rest now with your lovely grandmothers (mine and Josh’s mum) I will eternally be thankful to you and owe my life to you. You are my protector, my guardian angel and I will never let you be forgotten.
As for my cancer, I am finishing my first round of chemo tomorrow. There have been good and bad days with many side effects but I am pushing through and keeping my spirits high and positive. I feel so grateful that I have been able to catch this super early than most people would, so early in fact that I never showed any symptoms at the point of diagnosis. I can only thank my baby for this and hope that in catching this early I have a better chance of fighting this off for good. I want to say thank you so much to all my family, boyfriend and friends for being by my side, supporting me and always being behind me to push me through these tough times. I am so grateful for the love and support I have in my life. If there is one thing I have learnt from this, it would be that life is so precious and so short. One day you can be absolutely fine and healthy and the next day you’re not. So enjoy each day, hold your loved ones a little tighter and be kind to yourself and others.”
Time to fight and beat this!
By supporting our cause, you are making a difference in the lives of young teenagers and children who unfortunately have to spend Christmas in the hospital. Your generous contributions will help make their holiday season a little more magical. Furthermore, a portion of the funds will be allocated towards Lucy's medical expenses & providing her with a well-deserved treat. Not only that, but your donation will also enable us to organize a charity event, generating even more funds for our cause. Rest assured, your money is being put to the best possible use.
