DLS Baseball Team fund honoring Jack Sommerfield

Tax deductible
For those of you who didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Jack Sommerfield, he was an amazing human being who’s life was cut short from Cholangiocarcinoma. Cholangiocarcinoma is a rare and aggressive cancer that originates in the bile duct. Jack was only 27 years old when the disease progression took his life.

Jack graduated from Dallas Lutheran School in 2013. In his four years there he was named 1st Team All District in baseball every year (2009-2012) and 2nd Team All State his junior year. He was the heart of the baseball program all of those years. Older players embraced him and younger players learned from him. Coaches recognized his talent and influence on his teammates. He was awarded the Dallas Lutheran Lion Senior Athlete of the Year award in 2013. His legacy did not end, however, when he graduated. He continued his baseball career at Tarleton State University as a member of the Texans Baseball team. Jack’s love for baseball, his coaches, his teammates, and his schools proudly showed in everything he did. He gave endlessly and without expectation. After college, he participated yearly in the Dallas Lutheran Alumni baseball game. Safe to say, he was a coveted teammate!

In October of 2019 Dallas Lutheran was hit by a devastating tornado that destroyed many areas of Dallas. The damages were bad enough that more than half of the school had to be demolished and is still being rebuilt. While awaiting permits from the City of Dallas, the school is in need of funding to help with the current rebuild. It is my hope that we can raise as much money as possible in Jack’s honor to go towards the Dallas Lutheran School rebuild and with a portion of it going to the Dallas Lutheran baseball program that Jack gave so much to. In return, Jack would be commemorated in some way on the new baseball field. Our goal is to have Jack’s jersey number permanently in the turf behind home plate where he spent his entire career as a catcher.

There is no amount too big or too small to donate and all donations will go directly to Dallas Lutheran School. Even if you are not in a comfortable situation to donate, passing along the message to family and friends would help tremendously. We want to honor #13 in a big way and keep his legacy alive for generations of future baseball players. Let’s hit a home run for Jack!
