Scarborough High school Academic Decathlon

Please help Scarborough Maine’s High School Academic Decathlon team get to Nationals this year. With the limited budgets in school districts, and the ever rising costs of travel, we are looking at an expensive trip this year - but you can help! I've coached this event for over a decade, and I can tell you that this year's team is a group of dedicated and hard working students who will each greatly appreciate the opportunity to represent the state of Maine at the USAD National competition.

They have been working their hardest to study and prepare for the competition, so now it's our turn, as community members and supporters of education and our nation's youth, to help get these diligent young scholars to this year's national competition in the great state of Alaska.

If you are unfamiliar with the competition, you should know that it is one of our nation’s premier academic competitions, started in California, that engages students across the country in a team based academic competition that spans the disciplines, from art, music, social studies, and language arts, to math, science, and economics.

Students study an array of topics in seven disciplines organized around a common theme. The activity engages students not only in rich and diverse academic study, but also challenges their writing skills, requires them to deliver a prepared speech, and gives them the skills and confidence to navigate their way successfully through a formal, college-style interview.

You can learn even more about this  activity at www.usad.org

On their site you will discover that USAD’s mission is “to promote learning and academic excellence among students of varying achievement levels by developing and providing multidisciplinary academic competitions using Academic Decathlon® curricula.”

Our vision is to provide all students the opportunity to excel academically through team competition.

Our core values include:

The academic growth of students
Challenging multidisciplinary learning
Teamwork as a means to achieve self-knowledge and life skills
Providing equal opportunities for students of different achievement levels
The importance of inclusivity and diversity to learning and the human experience
High standards of honesty and integrity
Transparency in our relations and interactions with all of our stakeholders
Excellence in our programs, services and activities
Respect for diverse points of view.
This is a fantastic program, and I am very proud that we can offer such a rich and rewarding experience to our students here in Maine. Please, help us in achieving our goal, and closing our funding gap this year. Though trips like these are expensive, they are an investment that for these students will yield a lifetime of everlasting value.
