Hi, my name is Samantha Kelsey and I am a senior in high school. In order to graduate, I am required to complete a year-long project on something that inspires me. I have chosen to host a walk supporting mental heath.
Mental heath has had a huge imapact on my life, especially within the last two years. I was diagnosed with depression in May 2015 after being hospitalized in Strong Memorial Hospital's adolescent psyciatric unit for thirty one days. I kept my feelings bottled up inside of me for a while and finally my mind couldnt handle it and I slowly went into psychosis. It was a very scary and difficult time for not only me, but my family and friends as well. We couldn't have gotten through it without the help of the staff on the 4th Floor, thus the name of my campaign. I met the most amazing people during my stay on 4-9000. Going through this difficult time opened my eyes and made me realize how much stigma and carelessness there is towards mental health. I want more people to understand that mental health effects millions of families everyday.
ALL money will be donated to the Psychiatric 4th Floor unit at Strong Hospital as a "thank you" for everything they have done for my family and a "thank you" for everything they continue doing for patients with mental health needs. I will be bringing the money to them personally after the walk is done. More information about the walk can be found on facebook.
The picture connected to my campaign is of a life-long friend I met on the 4th Floor. The t-shirts we are wearing we made for a walk we participated in this past summer. The semicolon represents the path we were on. We could choose to stop or continue and we chose to continue on with our life because we matter!
The walk this spring will be in Brockport, NY. on the canal. This mile walk is called "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" so that we can start to end the stigma attached to mental health issues. Please support me with funds to help off-set the costs of t-shirts and water to be provided to anyone that walks with me. Any additional funds will be generously donated to the 4th Floor at Strong Hospital Psychiatric Unit so that they can continue to do what they do best; allow indivduals to continue.
