Help Laid-Off BuzzFeed News Union Members
Donation protected
On April 20, everybody at BuzzFeed News was laid off. And last week, BuzzFeed told us that everybody will not be treated equally on their way out.
While the vast majority of the union will stay on payroll and receive health benefits for 12 extra weeks, as covered by the New York WARN Act, four members of the BuzzFeed News union have already received their last paycheck.
We need your help.
BuzzFeed, using arbitrary and inconsistent rationale, says 4 members of the union — most of them women of color and the lowest-paid workers — aren’t tied to the New York office, and are therefore not getting the same severance deal everyone else is getting.
That’s 12 weeks of pay and healthcare.
That's messed up, and a disappointing end to the legacy of BuzzFeed News. But at times like these, we will always help each other, even if the company won’t.
Please consider donating to our mutual aid fund for our colleagues and help offset the losses from BuzzFeed’s negligent decision-making.
Disclaimer: This fundraiser is managed by Cody Corrall, a former BuzzFeed News employee on behalf of Emerson Malone, Zia Thompson, Sydnee Thompson, and Melissa Segura. The funds here will be dispersed evenly to our 4 colleagues to help them stay afloat.
