Dollar Donations for Bail Funds in NYC
Aight so boom, I’m sitting here in the comfort of my home blessed to be around my family and like many we’re discussing the tragedies over the news. My youngest siblings are speaking out on big companies that may be posting “statements” but aren’t donating despite their entities being the most capable. While I’ve spoken out on my frustration and have signed petitions in support of those risking their health and freedom during a pandemic in the streets of cities across the nation, I can’t help but feel like I’m not doing enough.
At the same time I’m seeing random people post their donations to several funds all over social media. While some of it is performative so some can say they’ve done their part and then dissociate, the fact remains that this money is going towards a cause of benefit. I’m sure if you aren’t a multimillionaire celebrity yet, employed or just feel like you don’t have the means to donate it’s easy to feel like you aren’t doing enough too.
Maybe this still isn’t enough but I figured I’d combat that last thought by starting a “dollar donation” fund. The thought is that maybe you don’t have 10000 to donate but if 10000 people donate a dollar, there’s an accomplishment of a greater good. The fund is specifically for raising bail for protestors in NYC who are risking freedom on behalf of those at home still practicing social distancing with their families. I started things off with a donation of my own in hopes of inspiring others to do the same. Additionally I’ve reached out to the organization receiving the funds directly to coordinate. Let’s kill this goal.
