Domestic Violence Shelter in Sudan

Shamaa is an organization that shelters battered women and pregnant women pre-marriage and their children. The organization is keen to provide these women with the support needed, improving their access to education and protection and alleviating social inequality.

Nour Hussein established the organization in 2007 with the help of social workers at the Maigoma Center. Through its mission for social cohesion, the organization has housed nearly 7,600 women who otherwise are subjected to discrimination resulting in greater marginalization in the community, seeking to break the restrictions of societal stereotyping and reintegrate them into society to achieve their dreams for a better future.

Since the beginning of the conflict in Sudan, the 12 women and children have had to face extremely difficult circumstances. This initiative aims to mobilize our community to facilitate crowdfunding in order to help them get to safety, (bus tickets to Cairo, Egypt have been surging), financially support for their care in Cairo including rent, medical expenses, sanitary needs, and any other crucial essentials. During times of extreme unrest such as these in Sudan, the most vulnerable in society often get overlooked. We are inspired by the work and impact of the Shamaa Organization and the foundational work they did in Sudan, providing them with financial support not only to survive the social and economic hardships but to thrive, and we want to continue to help elevate their cause and help the 12 women and children, they deserve to not be forgotten.
