One year ago on October 20th, Lindsay Smith went to a New Hampshire Court and was denied an order of protection against her abusive ex partner. Lindsay provided photos of the abuse she endured, and she also testified that her ex had threatened her multiple times and arranged his guns in front of her - yet somehow the judge ruled that there was no proof of imminent physical danger.

The malfeasance of one judge put Lindsay’s life in danger and less than a month later her abuser stalked her and shot her in the head before turning the gun on himself.

Thankfully Lindsay survived but will forever be reminded of how a system that was supposed to protect her, put her directly in harms way. The past year has been an emotional and financial nightmare for the Smith family. Lindsay has been fighting to be stable with her ‘new normal’ but that has had continuous setbacks. As I write this, Lindsay’s latest setback started in August when she had a surgery to reattach part of her skull. That surgery resulted in an infection which put her in ICU and she has been in the hospital since.

Unfortunately judges have immunity and can’t be held responsible for life altering and sometimes damaging rulings, regardless if the ruling did not follow laws and statues.

The Smith family has a lifetime of obstacles ahead of them and their insurance can only go so far. There was one person that could have protected Lindsay, and that person failed her on an unmeasurable level and the Smith family are left to pick up the pieces.

I am creating this fundraiser to help the family heal from the financial strain that is a direct result of a denied order of protection, and the tragic, life altering consequences of unjust decision. My hope is that this will help alleviate some of their ongoing expenses and give them a little piece of mind while they focus on Lindsay’s recovery.
