Don Foster Memorial Bench at South Park
Donation protected
On August 26, 2022 we lost a great man, Don Foster. At the anniversary of his passing, we would like to honor his memory with a memorial. It is with Mary, Heather, and Ashley's blessing that we would like to ask for your support.
One of Don's favorite daily activities was walking at South Park. Don was the faithful leader of our group that met every weekday morning near the Maple Springs Gazebo. We walked the same route so Don was assured getting his steps in. Don was like a machine! He would generally arrive BEFORE the start time that he had announced, just so he could get an extra lap or 2 in. Once our crew was assembled, we were off on our regular route. While we continue our daily walks there, we sure do miss Don and think of him every day!
Don and Mary also loved to frequent the area around the gazebo. They would walk together and take breaks on the benches. They would often talk about the condition of the benches and how comfortable they were or were NOT.
Don also never met someone on the walking trail that he wasn't ready to talk to and share a kind word with. He made countless friends on his walks, just by giving a hearty Kentucky greeting. Kids, adults, coaches, dog walkers, and new moms, Don was friends with everyone he met on his walks.
We would like to honor Don's memory by donating a new memorial bench for him in the Maple Springs Gazebo area of South Park. The Allegheny County Parks Foundation coordinates a program where friends and family can donate a bench. We have worked with Mary to select a design that we believe Don would have loved.
Please consider helping us by donating toward Don's bench. Our starting goal is based on the cost of a Classic 6ft Cast Iron Bench. Any additional money raised will be donated based on guidance from Mary.
