Don Hemenover, radio genius, cat/animal lover, cycling enthusiast, communications tower-climber, ham-radio Elmer, sci-fi nerd, general all-around amazing guy, died November 5, 2020.
Don was a dedicated state employee for 34 years. He came to the Integrated Public Safety Commission (IPSC) after working for the Indiana State Police (ISP). Those who had the privilege of working with or knowing him as a friend will remember him not only for his encyclopedic knowledge about all things radio, but more for his willingness to share it with others. Don was passionate about first responder safety and public safety communications, and was an esteemed “Elmer” within the amateur radio community (N9D00). He was often heard saying that “We are all here to help one another.” He lived each day exemplifying this principle.
Don never met a stray animal he didn’t rescue. His gentle spirit and compassionate nature was especially evident in his care for the uncountable numbers of cats and dogs who crossed his path.
A kind soul, with a huge heart, Don enthusiastically shared his knowledge and his “toys” with others. More than a few of his coworkers are in possession of bicycles, radios or other equipment he so generously gifted. His spirit will live on in our hearts.
Due to the pandemic, there will not be a service. This gofundme account has been set up to assist his widow, Tracy, with expenses. Thank you for your generosity!
