December 1 will forever be etched on Saleshni Karishma Chand’s mind.
It was the last time she saw her husband, Donal Sarwan Prasad, 36, a taxi driver based in Ba.
A day later, his body was discovered in Qalitu, Lautoka, but his car was parked at Anupam Theatre parking lot in Lautoka.
Before noon on Friday,, Mr Prasad of Varavu Ba, was leaving his home for a pick-up in Qalitu.
Ms Chand recalled the final moments before she bid her husband goodbye.
“I went to give him ice water (before he left).
“I called him on the phone and he said he was going to one job in Qalitu.
“That was my last conversation with him.”
When she didn’t hear from her husband the next morning, Ms Chand called his fellow taxi drivers.
A few, she said, had seen him before noon in Ba on Friday and that’s when she began to feel suspicious..
She attempted to lodge a complaint at the Ba Police Station, but given the 24-hour Police response, she had to wait.
Until she received the call that would change her life.
Case Of Interest:
A Police report said two teams of investigators were pursuing leads into the case of interest where a taxi driver was found motionless with visible injuries in Qalitu,, Lautoka, on Saturday afternoon.
Divisional Police Commander West (DPC/W) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa said the investigation, headed by the Divisional Crime Officer West, has the team’s following leads in Ba and Lautoka.
SSP Vaisewa said investigators would wait for the post-mortem examination results before classifying the victim’s death.
“I miss him so much,,” Ms Chand said. “We have two children and he was the only breadwinner.
“We have been married for nine years and it will be a hard time for me to adjust..”
The post-mortem results will determine the final funeral arrangements for the deceased.
Fiji Taxi Association (FTA) general secretary Aswhin Lal described Mr Chand as a kind person.
“I was in Lautoka and I went to the scene where his body was found.
“He looked like he was badly beaten up..
“I would like to request that drivers be wary of the passengers in this festive. If you think they are dangerous then drive to the nearest police station..”
The safety of taxi drivers was an ongoing issue they will continue to advocate, he added.
The late Prasad is survived by his wife and two toddler sons; one-yearold Kartik Prasad four-year-old Krishneel Prasad..
