Donate $9 for #9: Buddy Bench honors Blain Alves

Donation protected
Blain M. Alves, 17, of Peaks Island passed away unexpectedly on May 18, 2020 from a tragic accident. Peaks Island Elementary School, where Blain attended as a child, is raising funds in increments of $9.00 toward a playground “Buddy Bench” that will honor Blain for the kind friend he was to so many while growing up on the island, and throughout his middle and high school years.

Why increments of $9.00?  Blain was a tremendous student-athlete at Deering High School, and proudly wore the #9 on his football jersey. He was born on the 9th of October, and the number 9 has significance for other family milestones.

What is a Buddy Bench? A Buddy Bench is an inviting playground bench where a child can sit if he or she feels lonely or is unsure how to join in others’ play. When children on the playground notice anyone sitting on the Buddy Bench, they go talk with them and invite them to play. It is a simple yet powerful concept that helps children feel safe, welcome, and included. The Buddy Bench fosters kindness and care toward others the way that Blain’s bright spirit and kindness touched so many people in his young life.  Peaks Island Elementary School would like to honor Blain's memory with a Buddy Bench that can become an indelible part of our playground and island community. We would be grateful for donations of $9.00 to honor #9, Blain Alves, one of Peaks Island's very best.
