Dear friends, family, and community,
As John’s eldest brother, it is with a heavy heart that I share the sudden and unexpected passing of our beloved John Thao, who tragically died on September 23, 2023. John was not just a son, brother, uncle, and friend to many; he was a shining example of kindness, selflessness, and unwavering support for our family and friends. His passing has left us heartbroken and we will forever cherish the beautiful memories and achievements he has left behind.
As we grieve during this difficult time, we ask that you please consider donating and/or sharing this post in your circles to show support for our family. Thank you all.
More about John:
John was a jack of all trades, but was well known for how well he played sepak takraw. From a young age, John became passionate about the sport, having started alongside his dad and older brothers: Soua Thao and Houa Thao. John became one of the most dedicated young Hmong takraw players who, in 2010, competed internationally at the 2010 ISTAF World Cup with Team USA. John paved the way for a "new generation" of USA takraw players by helping the USA place in the Top 12 at the inaugural ISTAF World Cup, and thereby qualify to compete in the ISTAF Super Series. Most recently, in 2022, John competed at the 2022 ISTAF World Cup, once again as part of Team USA. This time, an older and wiser John helped guide Team USA to a gold medal performance in Daejeon, S. Korea thanks to his decision-making, his training regimen, and his experience on the court.
John also loved to go fishing with his brothers, friends, and nephews. He was always present for important family or friends events and milestones (such as birthdays, weddings, and his only sister’s college graduation).
Rest in eternal peace and rest easy little brother. You are now in a better place.
