Hello, my name is Nyameer Gony.

On the afternoon of Thursday November 24, 2022, my mother, Oro Obub, went to my uncle's apartment, Okach Obub, for a wellness check after days of no communication. The most they went without speaking to each other had never lasted more than two days–my mother knew something was wrong. Shortly after arriving at his apartment, my mother called the police and his landlord to gain access to his residence. The police arrived and found my uncle on his floor unresponsive. Authorities declared him dead on the scene, and the coroner suspects he died on Tuesday November 22, 2022.

My family and I are devastated. My grandmother is in her 70s and has outlived six of her nine children.

My heart aches for my family. My uncle played the role of a mentor, teacher, friend, and father-figure to my siblings and I. He was an integral part of our development. My uncle called me every day growing up to ensure we were well. He would call the house around midday during school days to make sure we attended class. Every phone call, he quizzed me on everything from linguistics to geography. My uncle passed his love for learning onto me, and I thank him for shaping me into the person I am today. I thank him for making me so vibrant. I thank him for making me assertive. I thank him for loving me unconditionally.
