In Memory of the Goldstein Family

Donation protected
In memory of Matthew, Lyla, Valerie and Violet, their extended families established a memorial fund, MLVV Goldstein Memorial Fund for those who wish to donate in lieu of flowers in their memory. Funds will be distributed but not limited to Brookline Public Schools and Baskerville Elementary School, where Matt and Valerie taught. If preferred, checks can be made to to MLVV Goldstein Memorial Fund (care of Lai Ha Yee, 80 Algonquin Rd, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467). Donations may also be made at any location of The Village Bank.

Matt was the “fun-cle” (fun uncle), the cool teacher and so much more, evident in the love everyone has for him. Matt loved the outdoors, playing soccer with his club teams, coaching, his students and most of all his family and many friends. Matt was always ready to greet a new face with a smile, a fun yet thoughtful conversation and the beginnings of a lifelong friendship. Matt was often louder than life, with his amazing stories and silly jokes, but he was also introspective, thoughtful and one of the kindest souls. You would be hard pressed to meet a more positive, loving person than Matt, until you met his daughters, the joys of his life. He will be dearly missed by all of those who had the good fortune to share in his energy and love.

Lyla was the person who brought everyone together. She knew everyone’s favorite dessert and baked it with love. Lyla was generous and thought of everyone else first. Lyla was always on the move, literally and figuratively. Lyla enjoyed traveling, exercise, playing basketball, lacrosse, baking, cooking and organizing events for family and friends. Most of all, Lyla loved her family and friends and couldn’t wait to spend time doting over the littlest members of her extended family. Being a mother to Valerie and Violet brought her immeasurable joy and she always glowed when speaking of her two extraordinary daughters. It is difficult to imagine gathering without Lyla’s love and care and we will always think of her as an amazing daughter, sister, auntie, cousin and friend.

Valerie was a star. Brilliant and inspiring, Valerie was a person you wanted to know and be with. She was quick to laugh, a good listener, creative, funny, loving, witty and kind. Like her parents, Valerie loved to bring people together to create something bigger while having fun. Valerie loved to act, direct, write and sing. Valerie was a born leader. She saw the world with clear eyes and the potential it had to be better. Valerie was helping to make it happen and it is a profound loss to all of our futures that her time with us was far too short. She was a light that brightened the lives of everyone around her.

Violet lit up every room she was in. She always had a sly smile, twinkle in her eye and a funny thing to say. A softer, but equally witty version of her dad and mom, Violet was full of joy and had a creative soul that was expressed wholeheartedly in her art. She loved music, sewing, painting and being with her friends and family. She excelled in school and was a gifted soccer player. Her kindness and dedication was visible in every aspect of her life as she committed herself to everything she set her mind to.
