Help Adriana's Life after an Unexpected Brain Injury

This past February, my daughter Adriana - a perfectly healthy, smart, and hardworking 15-year-old, suffered a hemorrhage in her brain that caused a severe brain injury that has left her unable to move, speak, eat, or stay awake. The hemorrhage triggered severe seizures that caused her to fall on her back and vomit. This complicated her condition by causing pneumonia after aspirating vomit. To save her life, neurosurgeons had to remove part of her skull to allow the brain to swell. During this, treatment for the pneumonia was done with the use of multiple antibiotics. Fevers, neuro storming events, low oxygen levels, and blood transfusions occurred on an almost daily basis while she was in the ICU. Since her injury left her unable to eat food, a surgery to have a gastrointestinal tube implanted to allow fluids, supplements, and medications to be administered. Multiple medications must be administered on a daily basis to control seizure-like activities, pain, and spasms in addition to Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Neuropsychology monitoring. Additional exercises to avoid muscular decay are provided throughout the day. A follow-up surgery will be required to correct the malfunction that caused the hemorrhage and re-implant the removed bone in her skull. It was determined that she was born with a congenital vein malformation (named AVM) that ruptured and caused the bleeding and swelling of her brain.

We are calling upon the generosity and kindness innate to all human beings to help Adriana in her long road to recovery. She will not only need extended therapies and medical care, but also equipment and supplies that will be used daily. She will need a new bed, a special wheelchair, medical equipment, a safe environment where to live that can accommodate her new needs, constant 24/7 monitoring, cleanup supplies, special liquid food, and medications. Special transportation to therapeutic hospitals, surgery centers, and follow-up appointments with neurologists will be needed on a demand basis. Adult supervision and support will be needed for her twin sister, who is on the Autism Spectrum, non-verbal, and requires constant monitoring.

Este pasado mes de febrero, mi hija Adriana, una joven perfectamente saludable, inteligente y trabajadora de 15 años, sufrió una hemorragia cerebral que causó una lesión cerebral grave, dejándola incapaz de moverse, hablar, comer o mantenerse despierta. La hemorragia desencadenó convulsiones severas que la hicieron caer de espaldas y vomitar. Esto complicó su condición al causarle neumonía debido a la aspiración del vómito. Para salvarle la vida, los neurocirujanos tuvieron que remover parte de su cráneo para permitir que el cerebro bajara su inflamación. Durante este proceso, el tratamiento para la neumonía se realizó con el uso de múltiples antibióticos. Fiebres, tormentas neurovegetativas, bajos niveles de oxígeno y transfusiones de sangre ocurrieron casi a diario mientras estuvo en la UCI. Debido a que su lesión le impidió comer, se realizó una cirugía para implantar un tubo gastrointestinal que permitiera la administración de líquidos, suplementos y medicamentos. Es necesario administrar múltiples medicamentos diariamente para controlar actividades parecidas a convulsiones, el dolor y los espasmos, además de Terapia Física, Terapia Ocupacional, Terapia de Habla y monitoreo de Neuropsicología. Se le proporcionan ejercicios adicionales durante el día para evitar el deterioro muscular. Será necesaria una cirugía de seguimiento para corregir el mal funcionamiento que causó la hemorragia y reimplantar el hueso retirado en su cráneo. Se determinó que nació con una malformación congénita de las venas (llamada AVM) que se rompió y causó el sangrado y la hinchazón de su cerebro.

No solo necesitará terapias extendidas y atención médica, sino también equipos y suministros que se usarán diariamente. Necesitará una cama nueva, una silla de ruedas especial, equipos médicos, un ambiente seguro donde vivir que se adapte a sus nuevas necesidades, monitoreo constante las 24/7, suministros de limpieza, alimentos líquidos especiales y medicamentos. Será necesario transporte especial a hospitales terapéuticos, centros de cirugía y citas de seguimiento con neurólogos de manera puntual. También se requerirá supervisión y apoyo de adultos para su hermana gemela, quien está en el Espectro Autista, es no verbal y necesita monitoreo constante.
