On 7/10 our entire life got turned upside down. It's with deep sadness that we let all of our family and friends know that last week, Alex, our 12-year-old, was diagnosed with a cancer called Ewing Sarcoma in his cervical spine.
He’s been having symptoms of left shoulder pain on and off for 3 months, as well as back and neck pain for the last couple of weeks. His shoulder pain became more frequent after he fell at school before the end of the school year. We went to see an orthopedic specialist 3 weeks ago were XRAY was taken, but didn’t show anything, so we were referred to start the physical therapy.
The day he supposed start his PT we brought him to the ER to get evaluated as he was declining, he could not feel his left hand. MRI showed cervical spinal mass.
On 7/11 Alex underwent guided needle biopsy procedure and the results came back as cancerous. At this point we were informed that he will need open biopsy to confirm the type of cancer he has, and he will need a port to be placed. We were informed that he’ll have to undergo chemotherapy first to shrink the tumor before having it removed.
While in the PACU it was noted that Alex was not able to feel or move his legs. The doctor made a quick decision to bring him back to the Operating Room for an emergency surgery and decompress his spinal cord. They were able to remove the majority of the tumor. Following his surgery we have spent 4 nights in the PICU before we got moved to the oncology unit, where we currently are. His PET scan and bone marrow biopsy results were negative, which means he has a localized disease.
We still have a long road ahead of us. He’s learning how to walk and working on regaining the feeling in his left hand. He’s starting his first cycle of chemotherapy on Monday and will continue doing so every 2 weeks for 14 cycles, with about 2 weeks of radiation after 12 weeks. He will be receiving treatment for the next 26 weeks.
Each chemotherapy will require a hospital stay.
To say that we are beyond upset, angry, terrified and sad would be an understatement. We are shocked, scared and really overwhelmed. We are absolutely just heartbroken.
Alex has taken the news as best as he can. He is scared and angry, but he is bad ass and ready to fight. Everything is so new and overwhelming to him.
We are taking things hour by hour. We will need our village to help us, we just don't know what we need yet. We need to figure out this new normal, figure out next steps and his treatment calendar while also managing his side effects and getting out of the hospital.
Thank you for all your love and support. Please don't take it personally if we haven't responded. It's just an incredibly difficult time right now.
How crazy life can be....one minute you're at home with your family then the next day, you’re in the hospital room with your child with your entire life turned upside down. So, hug the ones you love the most. You never know what life will throw at you.
For now, please send our family, especially Alex, all of the positive vibes, prayers and love.
