Hello, my name is Ashley McDaniel. My family has been struggling for years and falling futher behind. My partner Oliver Fresquez has has 3 spine surgeries the last was postponed because of covid. He struggles a lot with pain and nerve issues. He's been denied SSD 8 times. We lost our house in Oct 2021 when the landlord sold the property. After that we were homeless and stuck behind a locked gate in the national forest for the winter, in our short bus. We looked for a place to rent and I was working but it seemed like rent had doubled or tripled since covid happened. Now we live in Tres Piedres, NM on an off grid half acre. We have to haul everything. Water, wood, propane, trash, everything. We've had to get a car with taxes 3 years in a row because we can't afford to get anything good. Car prices also doubled or tripled for used cars since covid. In 2023 I missed 6 weeks of work for radiation treatment for a brain tumor. I had to stop breast feeding because of it. When our cars break, and we went almost a year without one in 2022 when our car lasted 2 months, things get really hard. There's only a bus 2 days a week and it's impossible to carry enough for a family of 4 and you can't take propane tanks on the bus. So I had to hitchhike. A lot. It's almost impossible when you close a restaurant and are trying to hitchhike 40 miles home at around midnight. I did it with pneumonia because my family needs me to bring in an income. Our car broke in January and I was fired February 6. Our taxes, which were filed at the end of January, are being held until we file 2020 taxes. I didn't work. I was taking care of our 1 year old and my partner was waiting for a postponed lumbar surgery. We filed but had to mail them. We don't know if we will even get our taxes which we desperately need. We're behind on everything and need a lot including living space. We're 2 adults a 6 year old and a 2 year old living in a 6.5x 12ft living space. I was going to get something with taxes but the car broke...again....and now we don't know if we will get taxes. We are having to do without more and more( my partner owns 1 pair of pants).
