Axel is a 12 year old boy who was born on September 4th, 2011. Born at 31 weeks, that was only the beginning of his battle. He was born with short-gut syndrome, and only had 16 inches of his small intestines, and spent the first 14 months of his life in the NICU of John’s Hopkins. Doctors there determined that he would eventually need a small bowel, liver, and pancreas transplant to survive. The next couple years were full of hospital stays and trips to different specialists, until he finally received his multi-organ transplant in April of 2013.

Axel's life was pretty much that of a normal kid, playing with his siblings, family vacations, and school until December of 2023, Axel was diagnosed with HCC, hepatocellular carcinoma which is a type of liver cancer. His team of doctors determined the best cause of action for survival would be a whole new liver transplant. Finally in April of 2024, his Aunt Mary was approved to donate half of her Liver to Axel. Unfortunately, in May 2024 the new liver was only functioning at 30% and Axel was yet again in the race against time for another liver. He was in full liver failure, and on a ventilator when in May he received his 3rd liver. Since then, the liver is doing great, but axel is still fighting to get back to his life and is still inpatient. He has battled pneumonia 4 times, and kidney failure and dialysis are now a part of his life. He is learning how to walk again and do all of the things he loves to do. He is excited to get back to school and all of his friends and teachers, and home to his brother and sister! It has been a constant battle for Axel, but he is a strong young boy!
