Donate to Brooke's Mission: Clearing Local School Lunch Debt

Hi! My name is Brooke and I am an ex-PICU, current NICU nurse. I am on a mission to erase school lunch debt in my area of Decatur, Ga.

As a kid, I was a recipient of free lunches. Without them, I probably would have gone hungry as I hail from a single-parent household and had a mom who worked 2-3 jobs at a time just to keep a roof over our heads and (minimal) food on the table.

I know what it’s like to be food insecure, and my hope/goal is to pay the balances due for school lunches one school at a time. In my area, some school districts serve cheese sandwiches to those kids with past due balances or no money on their cards. Yes, you read that correctly, and one of the districts doing this is one of the wealthy ones (Decatur City Schools).

I do not believe any child should be shamed because their parents can’t afford to send them to school with a packed lunch or lunch money. Providing cheese sandwiches to those children with overdue balances or no lunch money does exactly that. It singles the kids out and creates shame, which is unacceptable.

I will be paying off local lunch tabs with the help of the money raised here and, of course, will provide receipts!
