On Saturday, August 3rd, Cassy experienced a life-altering accident while rock climbing in the upper Sandia Mountains. A rock unexpectedly broke, causing her to fall 50 feet from the top of the climb. During the fall, her lower left leg was severely injured, sending her plummeting head-first down the rock face. Fortunately, her climbing rope caught her, saving her life.
The rescue effort was extensive. To save her leg, a mid-face helicopter evacuation was performed, and she was rushed to the hospital. During her six-day hospital stay, extensive tests revealed that all the ligaments (MCL, LCL, ACL, and PCL) in her knee had been destroyed. This caused her upper leg to fully separate from her lower leg, resulting in a complete posterior femoral dislocation at the knee.
Cassy now faces a long road to recovery, including multiple reconstructive surgeries over the next few months. She will require significant medical care and rehabilitation for several months to come.
This GoFundMe campaign aims to support Cassy in covering her medical bills from the emergency transport, prolonged hospital stay, extensive tests and imaging, medications, and loss of salary. Starting August 20, 2024, Cassy will be on unpaid medical leave until her surgeon clears her to return to teaching. Unfortunately, she only has sick leave to cover the first two weeks of her recovery and does not qualify for short or long-term disability. And unfortunately at this her insurance company is refusing to cover any of the 6 day hospital stay at UNMH.
Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a huge difference in helping Cassy on her journey to recovery. Thank you for your support.
