I went to the emergency room because I threw up in the middle of the night. 13 hours later, I had emergency surgery to remove my uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, lymph nodes, and appendix. That week, when I was supposed to start my new job, I was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer.
While I'm currently in recovery at home and with chemo on the horizon, we're starting this gofundme and reaching out to you to help cover household bills while I'm out of work for the next few weeks. Your donation will cover:
- Medical bills
- Rent
- Utilities
- Groceries
Background:
I was having stomach pains for the past few weeks (months?), but I delayed going to the doctor. You've heard that story before. I'm a mom. I take my daughters to the doctor, I don't really think about myself. But once I had some abnormal bleeding, I finally decided to see my OBGYN.
After an extensive amount of exams and testing, my doctor discovered a 14cm mass blocking my uterus. Concerned, she ordered blood tests, a CT scan and referred me to her most trusted surgeon. The next week, they called me every day to check in and give me updates. By the weekend, we had a number of appointments scheduled, prescriptions for pain medicines, and a general plan on what would happen over the next month.
However, by Saturday I was completely exhausted and was really struggling to make it through the day. In the middle of the night, I started throwing up. I couldn't wait to follow the plan. I felt like something was really wrong that needed immediate attention, so we went to the emergency room at Piedmont Hospital.
Within the next 13 hours, I was admitted into the hospital and prepped for emergency surgery. I met with the surgeon that morning, and he asked me to give him full consent to remove anything that troubling that he found while he was operating. I've learned that it was great that he was so aggressive because the cancer had progressed pretty far. After a week in the hospital, I had 2 operations, 1 fainting incident, 2 blood transfusions, 12 AMAZING nurses and nurse techs, and a diagnosis that I'm still grappling with.
...I have cancer. And I'm still working out what that means for my life, my husband, my children, my family, and all the people in this world that I love. To be honest, I haven't even been able to tell everyone yet. So we're taking this one moment at a time. One prayer at a time. One meal at a time. One treatment at a time. One Love & Hip Hop Marathon at a time.
In order to prepare myself for our upcoming battle against cancer, this recovery period is crucial. My new job has assured me that I have a position there when I've recovered, but until then, we're living off of one income and it's not enough to cover all of our upcoming bills. We need you to contribute whatever you can to our gofundme. This is the biggest support we need at this time so I can completely heal before I start chemo in 4–6 weeks.
Thank you to everyone who's reached out already with your love, support, and gifts. You've been light in this really dark time. Any donation amount will go a long way and if you can't give right now, please share this gofundme with others.
