Carmine Leonardi (CJ) is a 19-year-old, Class of 2023 Graduate from Patchogue-Medford High School, who has Hydrocephalus.
Hydrocephalus is a build-up of fluid in the cavities deep within the brain.
The extra fluid puts pressure on the brain and can cause brain damage. It's most common in infants and older adults.
Hydrocephalus is characterized by head enlargement in infants. Adults and older children experience headache, impaired vision, cognitive difficulties, loss of coordination, and incontinence.
Treatment is often a tube (shunt) inserted surgically into a ventricle to drain excess fluid.
As of Tuesday, CJ has had around 38 surgeries with another scheduled for tomorrow, 8/16/24.
CJ lost his Dad a few years back suddenly. CJ, his Mom, and two younger brothers live in Patchogue. His Mom, Heather, recently lost her job leaving the family without healthcare.
The medical bills are going to be astronomical and left on CJ as he is over 18. He just found out after tomorrow’s extremely risky procedure, he will not be able to drive for one year which will limit his ability to maintain employment.
This family has been through it and there is no end in sight. Anything anyone can do to help relieve the financial burden would be greatly appreciated!!
