This pair of stray dogs was found on Wait Road, near St. Regis Falls. They had no collars and had been spotted numerous times over the past weeks in that location. The story has been shared widely on Facebook, but no owners have been identified.
We spotted them yesterday, and went back this morning to rescue them. Despite being weary, and wary of strangers, they have proven to be sweet, friendly dogs. It's clear that they were neglected for some time - one is skin and bone and they were both infested with fleas. This week we'll get an assessment from a vet to find out more.
After their ordeal, I didn't have the heart to take them to the shelter. They seem to be comfortable and content in my fenced-in backyard, and sheltering on my back porch. I'm hoping owners will step up or others wishing to foster or adopt the dogs, but in the meantime, a number of people have generously offered to provide financial support. Funds raised here will help to defray the expenses for their care until they recuperate and are ready to go to the shelter, a new home, or possibly join our family permanently. TBD.
If funds raised exceed what is needed for their immediate care, the remainder will be donated to the Potsdam Humane Society.
Thank you so much for your support!
