The past two years have been difficult for everybody, but it’s been especially difficult for our aging generation.

Unfortunately, Betty Lou Connell (Matthews) becomes the latest to fall victim to the vagaries of these crazy times.

Betty Lou's story, Betty Lou was born to parents John and Betty Matthews and raised in Atlantic Highlands; she is a member of St. Agnes and a graduate of Red Bank Catholic. Betty met and married her husband. They had five beautiful children living and raising their young family in Atlantic Highlands. Betty Lou’s husband suddenly vanished, leaving her to raise her children, ages 5-12 years, by herself in the 1960s, which was not an easy feat, but she did it.

Betty Lou's heartache and loss continued, losing three sons early in their lives. Yet, her courage, strength and faith kept her going. She moved back into her childhood home to help nurse her ailing father and maintain her childhood home. She supported her family, working her entire life at Mater Dei, Little House, Bayshore Pharmacy, Dr. De Robbio, and Dr. Commetucci’s offices. On weekends, Betty Lou and her dad John could be found in Collingswood, Englishtown, or New Egypt auction flea markets which genuinely made a difference in the family income. Hard Work, Raising her children and Family was Betty Lou's trifecta.

Now, it's Betty's turn - After 91 years and living in the house she was born in, she recently received a foreclosure notice. The only way to keep this wonderful woman in her home, comfortable and safe, is to pay off the taxes.
