Yesterday our Surgical program received some news... Our Endoscopy Team Lead, after a very brief illness received devastating news. She currently is in Toronto East General ICU.

She has been diagnosed with a large anterior mediastinal mass and it is very rare.

After numerous tests, her diagnosis is Sarcomoid Carcinoma with an extremely poor prognosis. It is not curable and is considered very aggressive.

The tumour surrounds half of her trachea. It feels like someone has two hands around her neck all time, trying to strangle her.

She obstructs easily especially when eating foods, causing strider.

Since it’s sitting on her SVC, she has SVC syndrome and a small pericardial effusion and it’s displaces and pinches her bracheal cephalic vein.

When she coughs, she bruises where the chest tumour is, it appears to haemorrhage and it’s painful.

They are searching for a clinical trial if any available, perhaps immunotherapy as chemo and radiation don’t work..

D (we lovingly call her) is a caring, loving, kind and generous Nurse, Daughter, Mother, Sister, Wife and Friend. She is the first one to organize a gathering, gifts and to bring in treats. When my mom was ill she checked on me often.

With her permision and my RVH colleagues we would to raise funds to help offset costs her family will incur while she fights.
