My name is Aurora Ineza and I am an international student studying film in Berlin. I am in my final year and am working on my short film which happens to be my first short film as a writer and director. I have been working on this short film for the past year and I am looking to make this the best way that I can. Without further a due, here is the introduction to "My Mother's Living Room"
Logline:
A daughter fights her final goodbye with her dead mother.
Controlling Idea:
"The empty, needy mother becomes the negative mother because of her own as well as the projected rage of the child’s disappointment gather in her picture" - Annette Brauerhoch
Synopsis:
Peace is an immigrant woman in her 20s who finds out that her mother died on the day of her graduation. Due to the complicated nature of their relationship, she pushes it to the back of her mind until her mother starts manifesting in her regular life.
Story Arc:
While celebrating her graduation with her friends, Peace receives a phone call from her aunt that her mother had passed away. She refuses to let it get to her until her mother starts manifesting in her every day life and in her mind. Her mother, Elizabeth, appears in a bar that Peace is hanging out in with her friends, Peace’s room and balcony creating mental chaos.
Themes and Topics:
This project is meant to explore the results of complicated mother-daughter relationships. With the friction that gets created around mother daughter relationships especially if there is abuse and neglect of any kind which is sadly a part of life a lot of women can relate to. It deals with the themes of grief and how to grieve a person that hurt you especially within the confines of a parental relationship. Within this context, they are a black immigrant family which has many layers to it. The different traumas and pain that comes with being the child of an immigrant is understated and needs a lot more representation. In this context Peace is a child of an immigrant and has had to figure out a large portion of life on her own which has resulted in even more tension in her relationship with her mother.
We are in the final stages of our pre-production and I am excited to see where this project will go. I am beyond grateful to be able to get to do what I love and get better at my craft as the days go by.
Thank you for your continued support.
