Hi, my name is Jaimi and my dad is John. On June 5th, my dad was at the Oakland Cemetery doing some landscaping work for family. If you know my dad, you know the cemetery is his happy place…if he’s not landscaping family/friend plots or tending to my grandmother's, he’s walking either solo or with friends. While he was landscaping, someone with a gun stole his truck in an attempt to evade the police who were chasing him at the time of the theft. He drove erratically through the cemetery going 70+mph, tearing up the lawns and hitting/damaging so many headstones in the process. Thankfully, the front axle broke so he couldn’t make it out of the cemetery to potentially hit actual vehicles and injure people.
If you know my dad, you know his truck was his most prized possession. In his 67 years of life, his truck was the first brand new vehicle he had ever owned. He had a payment he could afford and a really nice truck that he took such great care of. We got the news on Thursday of last week (6/29) that they have deemed my dads truck a total loss. The frame was bent along with other major damage underneath. Unfortunately, as we all know, interest rates are through the roof and I can’t find a new vehicle that fits into my dads budget. He is retired and lives a very minimalist life on his social security. For the same truck, his payment would be more than double what he was paying so that is out of the question until the rates come down.
He has a vehicle (his brothers truck who passed away in January) - a 2011 with over 100k miles on it. It is not registered or insured so he will need to process the paperwork on that this week. But we’ve figured the total amount to be around $1,500 for tax, title and registration.
My dad is a sweet man who would do anything for the people he cares about. And if you are lucky enough to know him, you love him. He’s so easy to love because it’s just who he is. I would like to help raise the funds for him so he doesn’t have to drain his bank account trying to come up with this money. It’s bad enough his truck was taken from him, the person who did it will not be held accountable and he’s also living in fear now every single time he goes to what used to be his peaceful place. If you have it in your heart to help my Dad, I would be forever grateful. And I know he would be too. If you can’t financially afford to help, I completely understand. But if you could share this post and send good vibes his way, he desperately needs them.
