My name is Pam Warkentin, I’m raising funds to help Mwenda Dyck.

On Friday March 15th, Mwenda was knocked off his motorcycle and aggressively detained by plainclothes police officers while stopped at a traffic light. A bystander thought it was a road rage incident before the police finally identified themselves. Mwenda thought he had been jumped by criminals and once police identified themselves he assumed they had the wrong person.

Mwenda is a 23 year old Agricultural student at University of Fraser Valley. He was born and grew up in Winnipeg with his dad, Roger, who was a farmer, his mom, Gacheri, who has a doctorate in nutrition and two younger, active sisters. As a child he spent many hours riding in the cab of his dad’s combine learning about farming, fixing trucks and fixing farm equipment. Through his school years, he played various sports and his dad was his biggest hockey fan. He also grew his love of plants.

This past weekend, Gacheri reached out to me because I also have a son living in Abbotsford and we often connect to share needs as we look after our boys from afar. She told me that Mwenda had reached out to his sister to let her know he was at the hospital after being beaten up. He was in a lot of pain and he thought he had a concussion.

I'm asking for us to come around as a community to support Mwenda. We do not want this young man to have to start his adult life with unjust charges that will adversely affect him for the rest of his life. We need to take a stand and support one of our youth. For such a time as this.

Mwenda will need money to hire a lawyer and other costs as the legal system forces people to pay the fees associated with the charges before he can even fight them. Please help with raising funds to help him with all the costs associated with fighting these charges.
