My name is Bonnie Mathias, and this is my family – Carlton and Nancy Hall and
their children & the grandchildren. All Family.
So here we are, the Family, pulling together to rebuild and open Hall’s Chicken
Shack.
I met Nancy Hall in 1993 after joining the Union at Southwestern Bell. The more I
became involved with the Labor movement the more Nancy and her family
embraced me as one of their own. I became part of the Cooper-Hall extended
family. We all hung out at the Dallasite Billiards, then located at Hall and Ross, while Lillian
–Mom-played the 8-liner and Joe “Cool” Cooper-Papa-told stories of Dallas. They
were activists. They lived in South Dallas on Marburg. Papa was an accountant
and Lillian (Macy) was a precinct chair, VDR and they always stood for what was right and fair
for all. Papa told the story of how he was Terri Hodge babysitter back in the
day...and she confirmed the story!
Nancy Hall - activist, labor hero, Mom, Gran, Sister, Auntie, my road dog, mentor
and best friend and so much more to so many. She served as an elected officer of
CWA Local 6215 and Texas AFL-CIO for 30 years and retired from AT&T and the
Union within a few months of each other. She walked the picket line in the 80’s
while pregnant. She risked her life to work with the AFL-CIO and travel to
Columbia to meet with Labor leaders and discuss our similarities. She learned
Labor leaders in Columbia are assassinated! She told me when she retired it was
time to let the younger Brothers and Sisters step into the roles of leadership. We
lost her Mom suddenly and lost her Dad when he was in his 90’s. Thanks to her
family guidance and leadership so many people have moved into roles to mentor
others behind them. She took me under her wing, introduced me to everyone,
encouraged me to engage in the political process and strive to be sure ALL can be
involved in democracy. Voting is the easiest thing to do – encourage others to
participate to maintain the freedoms our forebears have fought for. Nancy’s
values ran deep in Dallas and Pleasant Grove.
On Mother’s Day 2022 Nancy was diagnosed with aggressive cancer. She lost that battle and 12 weeks after the diagnosis she was gone. Nancy’s husband remains in the Grove 5 minutes away
from our home and 10 minutes from the business on Buckner.
In February 2022 Hall’s Chicken Shack on Buckner Blvd caught fire that severely
damaged the building, thus temporarily closing the business. The family kept the business going through Covid with the drive through and catering. Everyone in the family has worked at
the Shack at one time or another during their lifetime. Hall’s has been a staple in Pleasant Grove since 1993. During a rough period, Nancy and I joked about dressing up in chicken suits to help business.
Through all the rough times over the years the Family always pulled together to make it all
happen.
Now, we need your help to rebuild this family business to honor the legacy of Nancy
Hall. Please give and share! Thank you in advance for your consideration.
We are in need of $100,000 to restore and reopen the business. The insurance coverage was insufficient to complete all that has to be done.
Due to the fire the building was declared unsafe by the City of Dallas. A fence was placed around the building's entire property line to ensure people didn't drive on the property. The building has been sitting vacant over a year and vandals have come through, cut through the fence and metal backdoor, even knocking out the drive thru window and ripped every wire and piece of metal worth anything of value out of the building.
Creating this GoFundMe in the hopes we can rebuild a Dallas/Pleasant Grove institution with a revamped look and menu.
Nancy was a woman of immense pride and resolve. Creating this GoFundMe is the Hall Family's last hope of ensuring the building she purchased remains a staple in her community Pleasant Grove, Dallas, Texas. We hope you can donate now, any amount will help this family.
All funds will go directly to rebuilding the restaurant.
Please share with friends and family. We thank you for your consideration.
