"A Journey of Survival: Sultan’s Story of Hope and Determination

My name is Sultan, and I’m a 25-year-old Lebanese mechanical engineer. I graduated from Beirut Arab University in May 2022, full of dreams for a future where I could build a life for myself and my family. But that dream has turned into a daily struggle for survival. Lebanon, once my home, is now a place of unrelenting hardship, instability, and war.

My family, made up of eight members, clings to each other as we fight through the chaos. We used to live in the southern suburbs of Beirut, but the war stole everything from us. Our home, our security—gone. Now, we move from place to place, hoping to find some kind of safety in a land where none seems to exist. My father, who spent his life caring for us, is now 58 and unemployed. His strength has faded, and the weight of responsibility now rests heavily on my shoulders.

I am the only one left to provide for my family. Every day, I face the impossible task of ensuring we have food to eat, a roof over our heads, and the smallest glimmer of hope. Alongside my father, mother, sister, her child, and two siblings, I stand alone in this fight. I used to work in the automotive industry, but as the war raged on, I lost my job. Now, employment is a distant hope, and our future in Lebanon has become a question I can no longer answer.

Every morning, I wake up wondering how much longer we can hold on. Basic necessities like food and shelter are slipping further from our grasp. My parents desperately need their medications to survive, but even that has become an impossible challenge. The black market thrives on our suffering, and with no financial resources, I am powerless to secure what they need.

In August, I made a decision out of both desperation and hope. I began learning German, with the goal of reaching the B1 level. I want to leave Lebanon, to escape this nightmare, and to work in my field of mechanical engineering. More than anything, I want to find a place where my family can live in peace, where I can provide for them with dignity.

But the journey to that future is long, and our present is dire. My family is in urgent need of help. I’m reaching out, not just for myself, but for the three young children in my family. The youngest is only three years old. How do I explain to them that their future could be different when our present is so full of suffering?

I don’t want pity. I want hope. I want the world to hear our story and understand that we don’t need war—we need peace, a chance to rebuild, a chance to live. I’m calling on anyone who can help—whether through donations or assistance in relocating—to give us that chance. With your support, we can not only survive but thrive, especially for the children, who deserve so much more than this world has given them."
