Vicki was a strong independent woman who works as a live in carer in Salisbury. Suddenly in her mid 40's she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colorectal Cancer and given 6 months to live. She immediately contacted her life insurance provider, Legal & General who looked into her case and have decided to deny her claim, The Health Ombudsman looked at it and considered it 'unlikely that someone could put on the weight in 12 months', and sided with the insurance company. We have a huge problem with this as she is the proof that you can put weight on and comfortably.
Vicki has managed to survive over a year so far but with limited funds, she is still having to work and live in Salisbury whilst undergoing chemotherapy under the NHS. Her treatment under the NHS is limited and is not having the impact one would hope, the only option is private treatment in Germany, the world epicenter for colon cancer treatments in all stages.
The costs are yet to be finalised and she is taking forward a consultation with the specialists (which will cost from £1500-£2000 and travel to Germany if required). The likely costs are as follows (though not clear which or how many will be required):
Gamma Knife - from £11,000
Rectal resection - £20,000
Robot-assisted surgery - from £30,000
Dendritic cancer vaccines - from £23,000
The funds raised will go to meeting the costs of these processes and we are looking to support Vicki before it's too late as she has put off things over the years whilst dedicated to her work. This is an evil disease to which she lost her father and Vicki has been let down on so many fronts, from delay in diagnosis to not having the security she had paid into for many years and we are trying to make a difference.
We would eventually like Vicki in a home close to her mum and brothers. She had hoped to move closer to her family in Bournemouth but without her life insurance and with Bournemouth Council being uncooperative she is stuck in Salisbury.
