Aug.25th update: She is breathing on her own now, only requiring the ventilator to give a little extra boost. She is much less swollen and her neck is out of the cervical collar. She is fully bandaged on her face and hands, but it looks like things are doing what they're supposed to - still too early to know anything about her range of motion or anything though. She is responding to commands and trying to open her eyes. We were able to sit and talk at her and got responses to questions by her wiggling her toes. She is able to shake and nod her head too. She was able to indicate that she was in pain and where.
Aug.24th update: They have been trying different meds to keep her calm while bringing her out of the sedation but nothing is working just yet. The laceration on the back of her head is still draining and the swelling is going down around her eyes and ears
On the morning of Tuesday, August 22 a vacant building exploded in downtown Prince George. A member of our family was working adjacent to the building and was blown from the blast.
Victoria was air lifted to the trauma unit at the Vancouver Regional Hospital where she is being treated in the ICU. Her injuries are severe and considered critical. Vicky currently has extensive burns, bruises, severe lacerations to her face and hands, a brain bleed with swelling and fracture on her skull. She is currently under medical sedation and on a ventilator until they can access the extent of her injuries.
Victoria is a mother to 3 sweet young children ages 9, 7 and the youngest will be celebrating her 5th birthday this weekend. Her long term partner, Ryan, will be taking periods of time off work to travel back and forth the long distances between Prince George and Vancouver to be by her side. This is a 1660km round trip each time.
The cost of raising a young family is hard enough to begin with. This tragedy will greatly impact the family’s ability to earn income. It will also mean significant expenses related to travel, accommodations, childcare and future therapies required for recovery, both physical and psychological. Our hope is that we can provide some support so that the family is able to focus more on recovery and less on the financial burden.
