Hi, my name is Sally and I am the Executive Director here at Kirk Centre.

Kirk Centre is home to 2 live-in cats, Mouse and Mabel. They have lived here since 2017. They are a cherished part of the staff at our non-profit Community Centre.

Mabel was found in a box on the side of the road with three kittens. They were all taken to the SPCA where Mabel and one of her kittens, Mouse, were then rehomed here at Kirk Centre. The two other kittens were adopted by a loving family.

When Kirk Centre took over the Kirk United Church building it had a fairly severe mouse problem. The staff were reluctant to use poison with so many people and children coming in and out of the building. An exterminator had let us know that the process of spraying would only get rid of the mice currently in the building, not stop new mice from entering. He suggested cats were the best route, as the smell of the cats alone keeps mice out. After speaking to the SPCA, the exterminator and a doctor who is an allergy specialist the decision to get the cats was made. The building has had no major mouse problems since.

Unfortunately in May of this year a cat scratching post fell on Mouse's leg, severely breaking and dislodging it in 3 places. He was casted and given pain and anti-inflammatory medications. He rebroke it three times after continuously needing the bones to be reset and a new cast. We learned the hard way how difficult it is to keep a cast on a cat!

In July 2023 Mouse then went into kidney failure due to the medications he was given to heal from his leg. The poor guy was hospitalized in order to see if he could recover. After one day he was making great progress so he stayed another couple of days in order to fully recover before he was brought back to Kirk Centre. He has been caged in one of our rooms here at Centre for the last two months with no space to roam in order to allow his leg time to heal.

At the end of August the x-rays showed he was finally making some progress and we hope the cast can be removed and he can get back to his normal in the next 3-4 weeks.

This tough guy has been through the ringer and everyone here at Kirk Centre, staff, board members and Tenant Partners alike have put in so much time, energy and money into Mouse's recovery knowing how important he is as a staff mouser, and the sense of comfort and home he brings to the building. Staff and board members have taken our sense of responsibility very seriously that he is ours to take care of. Thank you to all the volunteers who have helped with Mouse's special needs this far!

Kirk Centre took on these costs unexpectedly and is now asking for your generous donations to recover some of these funds. The current total cost of Mouse's recovery is $6,081.09.
