It is with a heavy heart that the legendary Willie James Nelson, the man behind the trumpet has passed
Willie J. Nelson was born in 1948 in Tampa, Florida. He has been playing the trumpet for over forty-four years. He started to play the trumpet at the age of 12 in the seventh grade at Howard W. Blake High School in Tampa, Florida. He played the trumpet in the high school band at the age of 13. In his senior year in 1966, he served as the band captain, student conductor, and trumpet section leader.
In 1966, two weeks after graduating from high school, he joined the United States Air Force and continued to play the trumpet in the Air Force Band of the Midwest in Rantoul, Illinois. After serving two years in the Midwest band, he received military orders for the United States Air Force Headquarters Band in Europe and played there for 18 months.
Mr. Nelson has traveled to over fifteen countries including England, Spain, Norway, France, Italy, Wales, Ireland, Holland,
Germany, and Turkey.
He played for
President Nixon in England in 1969, and for Prince Charles in Cardiff, Wales.
After serving four years in the United States military, he played with various recording artists such as Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, and Joe Tex.
He was a busker for the Bushnell in Hartford, Connecticut for over 25 years
He went from the military, to the streets, and to the stage. He represents the American dream.
