Donate to Jocelyn's Hopi Reservation Vet Trip
Donation protected
My name is Jocelyn and I have been a veterinarian for 21 years. I will be traveling to the Hopi Native American reservation in Arizona at the end of March to spay and neuter the dogs and cats of the reservation alongside three other veterinarians. This will be my third trip thanks to the generous donations from many people in 2024. On each trip, we spay and neuter about 150 animals over 4 days and provide other life changing surgeries. We rehome many unowned dogs and puppies by transporting them to the Arizona Humane Society at the end of our trip. We also provide medical care to the Cultural Center dog pack who have grown very close to all our hearts and who recognize us every time we show up. My favorite dog is in the pictures. The most important thing to give them are their vaccines and Bravecto to prevent mange, ticks, and fleas. Ehrlichiosis, a tick-borne disease, and mange are very big problems out there as well as Parvovirus. Over the last 2 years, we have spayed and neutered the Cultural Center dogs when we could catch them and now they are a stable pack. Funnily enough, they are also a very welcoming pack. When we arrived in October 2024, the pack had grown to six dogs as three had been dumped there. We spayed those dogs and got them into the shelter. Within weeks they were adopted.
Native American Veterinary Services (NAVS) organizes these trips twice a year. Their goal is to provide veterinary care to non-gaming reservations and to teach 3-4 University of Pennsylvania veterinary students (NAVS founder was a UPenn grad). I absolutely love teaching the students surgical technique over those four days. The Hopi people are very welcoming and thankful we come there. In turn, they give us special tours or perform ceremonial dances so that we may better understand their culture.
I am responsible for paying for my airplane flight, lodging, rental car and food. Any donations are appreciated as this is all out of my pocket plus I will not be able to run my business that week.
I have a lot of experience working in high volume spay and neuter clinics. I worked at two different shelters on my day off once a week for many years. I worked at a feral cat clinic for over five years once a month.
There is no full time veterinarian at the reservation nor within a reasonable amount of time as most of us are used to. I am doing this to provide excellent veterinary care to an underserved area. Thank you so much for supporting me.
My request for donations is for the following:
Lodging at the Cultural Center $700
Food. $300
Truck rental $700 (car rental itself plus insurance)
Gas. $200
Bravecto to give to unowned dogs $200
Plane Flight: I covered this cost with Southwest Points
Uber rides to and from BWI airport = $120
Dog food to leave for Cultural Center Dogs = $100
Total = $2320
Thank you so much for supporting me and my desire to bring veterinary care to places that have little to none of it.
