Last week, Julie experienced a medical emergency involving her nervous system. She is currently hospitalized but doing well. She learned from an amazing team of physicians that what her body was experiencing was a Functional Neurological Disorder that presented as a sudden loss of movement and speech. This disorder involves a loss of communication between the brain and the body through the nervous system. For Julie, it significantly impacted her mobility and speech. The good news is that Julie’s functional deficits are temporary. She is expected to have a full recovery with physical therapy and occupational therapy.

The less-than-ideal news is two-fold:

1) It will take some time for her body to heal. Her muscles are very weak and easily fatigued. Much to her chagrin, she will need a lot of rest and help getting around when she gets home. No chasing little girls around for a while.

2) Relapses can happen without warning, especially when fatigue and high-stress levels are involved. And if you know Julie, you know that she is going to have to make some big life adjustments to lower that risk.

Julie will not be able to work until her body and mind regain enough strength and energy to provide safe care to her patients. As independent as she likes to be, Julie’s body has forced her to slow down and to ask for help, physically, emotionally, and financially. She needs this time to heal, so she can get back to caring for her girls, her patients, and herself in a more sustainable way.
