Hi, my name is KaTrina Clay, and I’m a mother, caregiver, and determined woman striving to create a better future for my family. I’ve overcome countless challenges, including homelessness, postpartum depression, and financial hardship. But right now, I’m facing one of the toughest situations yet, and I’m reaching out for your support.

The Current Crisis

Upon exhausting our 4-month stay at the temporary shelter back in November 2022, my daughter and I took shelter at my grandmother's home. The home hasn’t had proper heat for over a decade. The HVAC system is broken, and we’ve been relying on space heaters to stay warm. Unfortunately, the house has old wiring, and running heaters overnight feels too dangerous. Recently, the power in our living room went out completely, and now the entire house needs rewiring.

On top of that, we’ve discovered a gas leak that PG&E couldn’t fully inspect due to fire hazards in the home. All of this has left me feeling unsafe for myself, my toddler, and my grandmother, who has Alzheimer’s.

Now I’m being forced to help cover the costs of repairs—repairs that should have been handled years ago. If I can’t contribute, I may be asked to leave, putting us at risk of returning to a shelter. With freezing temperatures outside and shelter beds already full, I cannot let that happen.

How You Can Help

I’ve set up this GoFundMe to ask for your support in covering:

1. Reliable transportation: I need $4,000 to combine with a $7,500 grant I’ve been awarded through the Driving Clean Assistance Program to purchase a car. I have been without a car for 3 years, and in order for me to get to work eventually and to get my daughter to daycare, I will need to drive as public transportation will make a 25-minute drive 1 hour and 45 minutes one-way. It will also help save money on delivery charges since I have to get my groceries delivered each time I go to the store.

2. Moving expenses: To safely transition to Los Angeles for new job opportunities. Follow me on LinkedIn to see my current career journey, as I have been documenting my entire journey from homeless shelter to my current situation there.

3. Home repairs: To keep my family safe and housed until it’s time to move.

Why This Matters

I’ve worked so hard to overcome past struggles, rebuild my life, and prepare for a better future. I have two upcoming interviews for jobs in Los Angeles that could change everything for me and my family. But this crisis has made it incredibly hard to focus on moving forward while ensuring my family is safe and warm in the present.
