My name is Gary Bruce.
My wife, Laurie Bruce (who preferred not to have her picture taken) was diagnosed with a rare type of lung cancer stage 4 in June of 2011.
She has never smoked or been around second-hand smoke.
This is a rare type of cancer that 15 to 20% of the people that have been diagnosed with this type of cancer have never smoked.
The surgeon performed a lobectomy in June of 2011 to remove the tumor from her lower lobe in her right lung.
After the surgery the surgeon told me with this type of cancer she will never go into remission or be cancer free.
The lobectomy left some residual cells, and the plan is to keep it from spreading.
At first, she was treated with chemo infusion and radiation at the hospital, but now she takes 3 chemo pills at home nightly.
The cancer has metastasized several times, so she has had to undergo more radiation treatments each time plus they have had to up her chemo level.
She has a scan every three months, sometimes more which adds to the ongoing medical cost.
We have done our best to pay off the initial surgery as well as every scan, radiation treatment, and oncologist follow-up to go over the results of each scan.
Our insurance only covers so much, so the rest is out of pocket.
As you can see, it's an ongoing battle to keep up with all the hospital bills.
In addition due to covid 19 my business suffered and never recovered.
So we are living on a fixed income.
