Hello! My name is Meghan Adams, and I am a Special Education teacher and BSU Advisor at Andrew P. Hill High School in San Jose, CA. I'm starting this GoFundMe to create a classroom snack fund in order to continue to provide free classroom snacks and water for both my classroom kiddos as well as my BSU kiddos!
I've been providing free snacks and water for my students since I first started teaching in August 2021. It started off with one student who would always ask if I had extra food after lunch, and I always did. Then this grew into two students asking for snacks, then three, then four, and the number steadily started to increase. Clearly, there was a definite need in my classroom, and I became determined to do what I could for my students.
My teaching practices are rooted in the core principle that all students deserve to learn in an environment where they feel safe and cared for. I cannot provide a safe and productive classroom environment, let alone expect any type of academic excellence, if my students are hungry. To me, it's very plain and simple.
My first school site that I taught at, Independence High School, and my current school site, Andrew P. Hill High School, are Title 1 schools in the same school district. Both schools mostly have students of color and have high rates of homeless and food insecure youth. Of course we get federal funding, and we have programs at school to support all of our students. However, every educator, especially those who have ever worked in a Title 1 school, knows that the funds we receive are never enough.
With this, I've been providing free snacks and water to any student who needs it -- this mostly pertains to my classroom students and their other classmates. I do not turn down any student who asks for snacks. As of the 2023-2024 school year, I became the BSU advisor for my school site, so I have also started to provide snacks for my BSU kiddos at every meeting we have (we meet bi-monthly).
Between providing snacks for my classroom students and my BSU kiddos, the cost of providing food and water to my students has become astronomical and unsustainable, especially as a young teacher just starting out in the profession in the Bay Area, one of the most expensive areas of live in the entire U.S. Since I started teaching in 2021, I have paid thousands of dollars out-of-pocket in order to provide these free snacks to my classroom students and, now, my BSU students.
Please know that this is something I have done, and will continue to do, willingly with no regrets. However, I am calling my community and any other generous soul to help me create a classroom snack fund so I am able to continue to provide this to my students without having to use my own funds to do so.
I absolutely love what I do, and I want to do anything within my power to help my students, so I thank you all in advance your immense kindness and generosity in helping me create a classroom snack fund! Thank you so much!
