A week ago, our niece, Skye, was climbing a tree and fell over 30 feet. She suffered a traumatic brain injury that includes three brain bleeds, a large hematoma, and a large gash on the back of her head. She was first taken by an ambulance and then life-flighted to Primary Children’s Hospital. After many unsuccessful measures taken by medical staff to stabilize the swelling of her brain, Skye had to have an emergency brain surgery early Monday morning. The surgeon removed a large piece of her skull to help reduce the pressure on her brain. The surgery was a success. However, Skye still has a long recovery in front of her. She remains in sedation to help prevent her brain from being agitated. She is under constant supervision as her brain pressure continues to fluctuate. A few days ago, they lessened the sedation to see what would happen. She moved her arm and legs, which was a good sign, but her brain was agitated, so they had to increase the sedation again. She also had an MRI today where they discovered that she had a neck injury below her skull, so she will need to wear a neck brace until that is healed.
This accident has turned Skye’s world upside down. She is a talented runner and holds the high school record in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m. She was being scouted by different colleges for her running prowess. Now, instead of enjoying her senior year of high school, she has a long road of rehabilitation in front of her. She is being raised by her widowed mother, and the expenses stemming from her injuries, including medical and rehabilitation expenses, will be high. Any monetary donation you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
