We are starting this GoFundMe for Alex and Emma Becker. Alex and Emma have a 3-year-old daughter named Josie. When Emma found out she was pregnant in September, they were excited to add another addition to the family. At their first appointment, they were shocked to hear they would be adding two new additions to the family. At the 20-week anatomy scan, Alex and Emma found out they would be having a boy and a girl (Myles and Sadie). It was also discovered that Sadie has a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). CDH is when there is a hole in the diaphragm, which allows the abdominal organs to come up into the chest, displacing the heart and prohibiting normal lung development. They learned that following the delivery of the twins, Sadie will be immediately intubated and taken to the NICU, where she will have to undergo surgery. Since the diagnosis, Alex and Emma have had numerous appointments to try and figure out the best plan for Sadie.
Alex and Emma had planned to deliver the twins at Wesley; however, due to Sadie’s possible need for ECMO, this is no longer an option. After doing research on this condition and speaking to other families with this diagnosis, Alex and Emma traveled to John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital (JHACH) in Florida for a consultation, as JHACH has a specialized CDH team and unit. After many scans and appointments, the team at JHACH believes they can give Sadie a 90-95% chance of survival. It is unsure of long-term outcomes, but Alex and Emma believe that JHACH can give Sadie the best chance at not just surviving, but at thriving. Due to this, Alex and Emma have decided to deliver the twins at JHACH, where Sadie will receive care in the CDH unit and undergo her repair. Due to the risk of preterm labor with twin pregnancies, Emma will have to relocate back down to St. Petersburg at 32 weeks, where they will then stay until Sadie is discharged from the CDH unit of the NICU.
The funds raised will help Alex and Emma with relocation, Alex’s travel back and forth, and other medical expenses while in Florida. Any and all prayers for the Becker Family, especially Sadie, are appreciated!
