Aloha!
We are students from the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, and we are currently in the production of a Hawaiian short film highlighting the passing of cultural practices from generation to generation.
About the Film:
This short and sweet cultural story follows a young Hawaiian boy who finds sanctuary at his Tutu’s home, where they embark on a journey of reconnection through a unique family tradition at risk of disappearing forever.
A Message from the Writer/Director:
"This story is dedicated to all the Kānaka ʻŌiwi (Native People) of Hawai'i, whose lives are defined by such unforgettable resilience against a long history of hardship. Ulana is inspired by a personal experience, which is only one of the countless other stories of our lāhui (nation) woven with the kaona (deeper meaning) to guide us forward. Their stories tell us how meaningful, profound, and healing it is to reconnect with the very culture and traditions we originate from, weaving us deeply with our culture, language, and ancestors."
About the Director:
Nanea Ah You is an aspiring Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) filmmaker pursuing Hawaiian Studies and Cinematic Arts at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. With a strong background in cinematography, editing, and filmmaking yielding multiple film competition wins; and recognitions at the Hawaiʻi and national levels; Nanea continues to contribute through her profound art form as a cultural storyteller through the powerful medium of film. Born and raised on the island of Maui, Nanea carries with her the hopes and dreams to ensure the vibrancy of Ka Lāhui Hawaiʻi (The Hawaiian Nation).
