It's the most wonderful time of the year- No Shave November!
For the men and women of the Upper Macungie Township Police Department, No Shave November is a campaign to raise funds for a worthwhile cause. To participate, officers must pay a monthly "buy-in" fee, allowing them to grow a (trimmed) beard or mustache. Female officers are permitted to use nail polish that contains color. Of course, our department's professional staff is allowed to participate, too!
This year, the UMTPD is raising money for the Hydrocephalus Association. Hydrocephalus is a chronic neurological condition caused by an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities (ventricles) of the brain.
Hydrocephalus happens when there is an imbalance between the amount of CSF produced and the rate at which it is absorbed. As the CSF builds up, it causes the ventricles to enlarge, putting increased pressure on the brain.
Hydrocephalus affects many people, from infants and older children to young, middle-aged, and older adults.
Over 1,000,000 people in the United States currently live with hydrocephalus.
In the United States, 1 out of 770 babies develops hydrocephalus each year.
NPH is most commonly seen in adults aged 60 or over. A recent study estimates that 800,000 older Americans may be living with NPH. This disorder often goes undiagnosed. It is estimated that more than 80% of cases remain unrecognized or untreated.
While there is currently no known way to prevent or cure hydrocephalus, it can be treated with surgical intervention.
Thank you for supporting our officers and the Hydrocephalus Association!
